Why I wrote the report

Recently there have been an increasing number of ventures advertising Public Internet Access Terminal (PIAT) Business Opportunity. Their ideas are well backed up by common sense and by excerpts from well-known and trusted sources. One can see their advertisement on TV and the Internet. It looks like there is a great opportunity in the Public Internet Access Terminal (PIAT) business. The business opportunities sellers make it sound as a very simple to implement business plan: buy a terminal (for, lets say, $10,000), find an appropriate location, install a DSL line, make $800-$2000 a month and return your money in one year or less. Of course you must be crazy not to buy one-two or more terminals for yourself while somebody else from your area have not done it yet.

We conducted a study of this business by actually going into this. We dealt with two completely different business opportunity sellers, two different manufacturers, and two different terminal locators. One terminal was installed in a hotel with 140 rooms, and the other at a convenience store in a busy shopping mall. While the terminals do make some money, in reality it turned out to be a different picture from what the business opportunity sellers tell you during sale.

While the Public Internet Access Terminal business opportunity exists, and there are a number of successful PIAT businesses, a potential operator must take extra steps in order to investigate the real potential of the opportunity, possible expenses and the problems he may face when implementing his business plan. The price paid for the opportunity is also one of the key factors.

PIAT business opportunity sellers usually provide you with the best case scenario. They would not tell you about the real probability of your success and what problems you may face. A large portion of costs going into business may also be omitted. They also usually sell overpriced products. This report will help one estimate other scenarios including the worst case.

Unfortunately one may not predict the outcome unless he or she actually goes into the PIAT business, or already has an experience in this business. While the PIAT business is usually presented by its sellers as a proven business, the risk of not making money is high, just as in many other businesses, and only a prepared person should get into it.
